The Magpies
Transatlantic folk band The Magpies are rapidly becoming one of the most exciting and innovative acts on the contemporary roots scene. Their sublime harmonies, exquisite musicianship and impressive songwriting draw on Anglo and American traditions, weaving Celtic folk, bluegrass and Appalachian influences into a seamless, modern sound.
Founded by Bella Gaffney (award‑winning singer‑songwriter, guitarist and banjoist) and Holly Brandon (acclaimed fiddle player and tunesmith), the band also features Kate Griffin (banjo, dobro) and Cathy Ife (bass guitar). Together, they craft a fresh brand of transatlantic folk, with a strong thread of feminism running through their music and a commitment to championing gender equality in the industry.
Their critically acclaimed debut album arrived in 2020, followed by Undertow in 2022 — a rich showcase of their live sound, pairing flawless instrumentation with intricate harmonies and vivid storytelling. The album’s success was immediate, earning over a quarter of a million Spotify streams, a place in the Official Folk Albums Chart Top 40 and a BBC Radio 2 live session. Their third album is due for release in April 2027.
On stage, The Magpies have toured extensively across the UK and appeared at major festivals including Glastonbury, Cambridge, Larmer Tree, Shambala, Towersey and Deer Shed, alongside international performances in the USA, Canada, Ireland, Portugal and Luxembourg. They also host the fast‑growing Magpies Festival at York’s Sutton Park Stately Home, celebrated for its top‑quality line‑ups and commitment to inclusivity.
